Delhi News-Record — The high cost of gasoline is making people think twice about expensive shopping trips to the city.
This in turn is making specialty events such as last weekend’s Christmas craft show at the Delhi Belgian Hall more attractive to residents who want the benefits of unique gift ideas without the hassle of commuting.
A total of 30 vendors were on hand Saturday for the Belgian Hall Ladies Auxiliary’s 13th annual Christmas craft show.
“It’s been a very good day,” auxiliary member Anita Van Herzl, of Delhi, reported. “This is a big event for us.”

Delhi News-Record — It was a beautiful day for a yard sale last week as members of the Delhi Belgian Ladies Auxiliary held their 12th annual yard sale.
“We got rained out last week when we were supposed to hold this,” said Herna Verhaeghe, co-convener. “We didn’t want to wait to long from then, but this has ended up being the perfect day for a yard sale.”
From their opening at 6:30 a.m. Verhaeghe said the crowds were steady as they made their way through tables of kitchen accessories, children’s toys, knick-knacks, clothing and other items.
“We took away two tables already,” said Anita VanHerzele, co-convener. “That’s how busy we’ve been, we’ve emptied two big tables.”

Delhi News-Record — Wholi-board can be described as a game similar to horseshoes, except you use washers and try to get them in one of three holes.
Or, wholi-board is like shuffleboard-frisbee. That’s how wholi-board tournament organizer Rick Kosynski described it.
“There’s so many different versions of it,” he said, noting the game is also known as Belgian horseshoes and if the participants want, “It can involve a little bit of alcohol.”
Kosynski, the manager of the bar at the Delhi Belgium Club and wholi-board player for eight years, is hoping to stir up some local interest in the game to hold a league in the winter. He was introduced to the game by friends at his trailer, where they play almost every weekend in the summer, but he said the game can easily be brought inside. The tournament on Saturday was held downstairs at the Club.
Many of the tournament participants were friends who also play wholi-board at their trailers. Barb Burt, of Niagara Falls, explained the rules of the game.

“The Flemish Emigrant” sculpture has become the talk of the town.
More than 350 people attended the unveiling of sculpture at the Delhi Belgian Hall on April 3.
“It was an excellent evening,” said president Gaston Geysens. “We were very pleased with the turnout, especially considering the weather.”
“The Flemish Emigrant” is a sculpture made from bronzed metal and created by artist Patrick Steen of Leke, Belgium. The piece had been donated to the Delhi Belgian Club as a symbol that Flemish emigrants, who travelled to the “new world,” haven’t been forgotten.

Gaston Geysens can’t wait for the unveiling of The Flemish Emigrant.
The Flemish Emigrant is a piece of artwork created by artist Patrick Steen, from Leke, Belgium, which has been generously given to the Delhi Belgian Club.
An unveiling is set for April 3 at the Belgian Club beginning at 4:30 p.m.
“This is a great piece of artwork to have,” said Geysens, as he explained the importance of the piece. “This sculpture represents everything that emigrants had to face when coming to North America.”
Ludwig and Doreen Vandenbussche, also of Leke, Belgium, have spent 25 years occupied with the study of Flemish emigration to Nord America – or Canada and the United States.
The couple thought there was not enough attention given to the Flemish people, who did emigrate, so they set up a private campaign.
